What can the app capture automatically — pictures, video, or both?
Both, but not at the same time, and neither happens in a browser tab. Capture mode is a choice between 📷 Snapshot — a still of your screen at entry and at close — and 🎥 Video, a clip covering the whole trade. Snapshot is the default. Automatic capture of either kind runs in the desktop companion only.
Take the browser question first, because it is the one that catches people out.
Automatic capture needs the desktop app — for stills as much as for video. A browser cannot photograph another application, so there is nothing for the web app to capture at the moment of a fill. It is not that video is the desktop feature and pictures are the shared one: in a browser tab, Auto-capture on trade fill is greyed out and says Requires the desktop shell, and the Video button is dimmed on top of that.
What you can still do from a browser is attach an image to a trade yourself, and receive snapshots through the webhook — your platform's own screenshot hotkey posts the image in and it attaches by timestamp. That path needs no desktop app, but you press the key; it does not fire on a fill.
With that settled, the two modes answer different questions.
Snapshot gives you two stills per trade: one taken as the trade opens, one as it closes. It is fast, the files are small, and it is enough for the great majority of review — you can see what the chart looked like when you decided, and what it looked like when you were done.
Video records continuously instead. The desktop companion keeps a rolling buffer of your selected monitor in memory, marks the moment of the fill, and after the trade closes it cuts a clip that runs from before your entry to after your exit. The Snapshot tab on the trade detail panel becomes a Video tab. It answers a question a still cannot: what the tape was doing while you were holding.
Video mode also takes one still at the close and uploads that to the cloud, even though the clip itself stays on your machine. That is deliberate — it means a trade recorded on your desktop still shows you something when you open it later in a browser.
The trade-off is storage. A still is a few hundred kilobytes. A clip covering a forty-minute hold is not.
One thing worth knowing: the mode is per-machine. It is remembered on the computer you set it on and does not travel to your other devices, because the thing it depends on — whether a desktop companion is running — is a property of the machine, not of your account. A browser that somehow finds Video selected falls back to Snapshot rather than pretending it can record.
What does travel is Auto-capture on trade fill, along with your clip lengths and video storage choice. Turn auto-capture off on one machine and it is off on all of them. Your monitor choice and both storage paths stay where you set them, which is what you want — a drive letter or a display index means nothing on another computer.
